original poem and art by Marilyn Narey
I created this mixed media on canvas to feature my original poem, “a corner of sky”, a piece that evolved from a “waking dream” that I felt needed to go beyond a side-by-side poem-illustration type format. Using the notion of a peeling billboard wherein words and images with varied lettering styles, textures, and multiple scale-shifts occurred naturally. Using colored pencil, torn tissue, cut paper, and acrylic paint, I created layered “planes of reality” reminiscent of a peeling billboard. The intriguing visual effect that resulted is intended to cause others to experience the disequilibrium felt in my waking dream: one that piques curiosity and provokes further investigation into what is happening here. I meld the words and images into one unique “visual” text where words and image advance and recede throughout the composition. Additionally, although I wrote the poem’s lines in a specific sequence alternate sequences may be constructed by the readers/viewers as they move across the hybrid piece, thus, bringing them more intimately into the strangeness of the narrative and to greater participation in making meaning of this hybrid work.
